ACT Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and Committment Therapy ACT is a form of clinical behavior analysis. Similar in ways to CBT cognitive behavioral therapy , but also incorporates acceptance and mindfulness exercises. ACT was developed by Steven C. Hayes, Kelly G. Wilson, and Kirk Strosahl in the late 1980's. ACT attempts to help people be present and accepting of worry, anxiety...while continung to focus on goals based on their values.
Client: "I want to stop doing this ,BUT I am too anxious"
Clinician : " You want to stop AND you are too anxious"
this subtle shift in language is a great example of being able to move towards things in your life that matter while accepting anxiety...
