PHILOSOPHY

I think, when we continually experience difficulty, loss, or hardship, we have a hard time stepping back far enough to see things clearly; to see the whole picture. We become entrenched in our experience and believe we cannot get out. My practice is based on the certainty of human growth and hope. We need not be trapped in old patterns, cycles, ways of thinking, or ways of living. As we learn to focus our attention on what helps us, we experience a cycle of growth and hope that progressively develops into our best selves. In therapy, we create a healthy balance between sharing, making connections, and collaboratively strategizing to address problems, easing hurts and generating change. I enjoy working with individuals that are seeking greater clarity in their lives and who want to take an active role in their own growth.

Part of my approach includes adjusting the words we use, so that we may be more generous to ourselves and to give others increased opportunity to hear and understand us. When we are more conscious of our word choices and expression, we gain increased awareness of judgments we make that may be unconsciously harming ourselves and our relationships.

Another part of my practice is skill development. While I may draw on skills from therapeutic modalities, such as DBT, I aim to bring increased attention to your past successes so that we can build on individual strengths and create unique strategies that will feel more natural and soothing to you. In this way, we can develop the abilities needed to safely explore and ease our sources of pain, and to develop the competencies to tackle new opportunities. We cannot change the past, but we can change the story we tell ourselves, and to find value in it. In doing so, we may begin to give ourselves credit for our courage, diligence, self-love and self-respect, and to see more of those qualities in others.

Finally, it is incredibly important to me that I get feedback from you. The therapeutic relationship is the greatest indicator of the progress that can be made in therapy. By gaining input from you, I can increase the likelihood of meeting your needs, thus create a relationship built on trust and purpose.
