Online Counseling via Skype
Practice Description: How on earth are you supposed to choose something as important as a therapist from a two-dimensional blurb on the internet? So I invite you visit my website, where there are 2 short videos of me talking about what I do, and lots of other information you might need to make a choice. You can at least hear my voice, get a sense of my style, & see if I might be a match for your needs. If you're tired of leaving messages for therapists, try calling me; I try always to answer if at all possible. I now offer online counseling via Skype for anyone outside the local area who'd like to work with me. See my website for links to describe how online counseling can be a great alternative to traditional in person therapy, and how it works.

Most licensed professionals have a pretty similar education & bag of tricks. What it really comes down to is how good a fit we might be. Please visit my website (link on this page) for lots more information about me, my way of working, and please do pick up the phone for a live sample, 11am-8pm. Or if it's easier, you can text or email me your number and I'll call you.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by stress & the demands of your life? Is it even hard to be there for the people you're close to? Maybe you lie in bed at night worrying, unable to sleep; or find yourself uncomfortable with new situations or people. You don't have to be stuck in this painful place. Much of how we experience life is a result of our habits of seeing and treating ourselves; that's the good news--it puts alot of power squarely in your hands, and habits can be broken. I can teach you an extremely effective 3-step method to do just that. And it won't take years and years of weekly sessions to get results.

My therapeutic practice includes the use of humor and heart as well as education and intelligence. I believe that within each person lies the means to achieve healing and satisfaction. Many practitioners of specialized techniques offer a "one size fits all" approach to therapy; I've found that people are simply too complex and unique for any single technique or modality to be effective for everyone.

My way of working is to take the time to learn about you and your life, then construct an individualized therapeutic program that addresses your unique personality and needs, and always a respectful and supportive therapeutic environment. However if challenging self-defeating patterns is necessary, firm, caring boundary setting is within my repertoire as well. I'm dedicated to ensuring that my clients get better, which may at times mean that some temporary discomfort is part of the process of change--like beginning an exercise program and getting sore muscles at first.

I am an experienced, Nationally Certified, State-Licensed Professional Counselor; I have a Masters degree in Counseling from Portland State University. Day, evening, or Saturday appointments available. Call me at 503-913-4201. Id love the opportunity to help.

Reaching out and taking that first step to get help can be the hardest part--it does get easier. Don't put off feeling better even one more day.

What About Insurance?
I will provide you with a document to submit to your insurance so they can reimburse you directly. Dealing with multiple clients' insurance companies is exactly as stressful as you might imagine--just multiply your own insurance headaches by 30 or 40, and also imagine that your livelihood depends on the caprices of those companies, as well--you get the picture. This is the most effective way for me to have the peace, reduced stress, and self-care time to be the best possible therapy provider I can be for you, my clients--I want each and every one of you to get my absolute best. I am always preaching the crucial importance of self-care to clients; that message needs to be reinforced by actually practicing what I preach in how I operate my business.
There are several low/no cost options for therapy in the Portland metro area. These include:
Portland State University Counseling Clinic
William Temple House
Lutheran Community Services
Accepted Insurance: Any PPO (with Out-of-Network Benefits)
Blue Cross
United Behavioral Health (UBH)
Insurance and Billing Instructions: Services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan. Many plans will cover a substantial portion, usually at least 50%, when you submit the form I will provide for them to reimburse you directly. You may also use Health Savings Account funds to pay for therapy. If I am in network with your insurance I will bill them directly and collect your copay.

Many people are just not comfortable having their private mental health information shared with insurance company personnel; others don't want bureaucrats deciding how much treatment they're allowed to have; and most importantly of all, everyone should have the right to go to the practitioner of their choice, whom they trust and feel comfortable with, and not have that choice truncated and dictated by their insurance providers.
Office Hours: day, evening & saturdays
Additional Comments: The counseling process can utterly transform your experience of life; it feels incredible to devote your resources to your own self care & development. It can also require challenging some old, limiting programming that questions whether you're worth all that time, energy & resources: you are worth it-we all are.
