What is Art Therapy? A Child's Perspective

Art therapy is a profession that uses the creative process of art making combined with talking to improve the well-being of your body, your thoughts and your feelings. People of all ages can benefit from art therapy. By expressing yourself through art, you can solve conflicts and problems. Art therapy can help you develop skills to make new friends and to keep them. While you enjoy creating art, you can change troublesome behaviors, reduce stress, increase positive feelings about yourself, and understand yourself better.

Art therapy is used with children, adolescents, adults, older adults, groups, and families who have a variety of difficulties. Often, feelings and thoughts seem to be wildly out of control. This can be true for a personís body too. This can make it difficult to learn, take tests and focus. Sadness can be so deep and constant that it is hard to live with. Fear and anxiety can stop people from enjoying life. Families may be fighting constantly, with everyone feeling misunderstood. Some families are troubled by divorce or death. Physical challenges and illness may lead to other problems. Art therapy can be the source of relief and positive change.

Art therapists are trained in college and then graduate school, to offer drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art media as a way for people to grow and create wellness. You donít have to be a good artist. You just have to want the difficulties to improve, and put your trust and energy into creating wellness.

We can do it together!

Be well,

Lois Plitt Warren, MPS, ATR-BC, LCAT (That means I went through all the training.)
