Additional Comments: Many individuals that I see are referred for a neuropsychological evaluation. This type of evaluation involves assessing one's cognitive skills, which includes verbal and spatial organization skills, speed of processing, problem-solving, new learning and memory, and emotional and personality functioning. For individuals with concerns regarding learning disabilities, this also would include academic assessment in areas of reading, written expression, and mathematics. This process usually entails an initial interview (in the case of a child, this includes an initial parent interview and a subsequent initial child interview), neuropsychological and psychological testing (4 to 8 hours, depending on the referral question), followed by a detailed review of the findings, recommendations, and a detailed written report. Evaluations are often used for directing treatment planning, including therapy and possible consultation with primary care physician or psychiatrist in the case of medication management, and provide information for educational settings to determine needed accommodations and interventions.
