| Practice Description: |
People often come to therapy when all attempts at fixing a pattern, situation, or problem in life have seemingly failed, or when faced with an unexpected loss or stressor that destabilizes their balance. At times like this, when one is feeling lost and uncertain about how to move forward, associated feelings of worry, self-blame, guilt, or inadequacy may become overwhelming. Starting with where you’re at, we'll work to create understanding and connection among various parts of your self and your life experiences. Integration of different parts of oneself into a cohesive whole is at the heart of psychotherapy process. Building bridges within your own mind fosters an internal sense of self-knowing, well-being, and autonomy; integration also allows you to be more fully present in your day-to-day activities and in your close relationships. Over time, psychotherapy, and the tools it provides you with, will afford you greater flexibility and adeptness in choosing where to focus your energy and mental activity, and how to proceed towards valued life goals. Psychotherapy provides a very powerful path towards increasing your understanding of yourself and deepening your intimate relationships with others.
Over years of training and professional practice, I have helped people with anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and major life stressors build lives that feel rewarding and authentic. In addition, I am experienced in working with adults who have experienced childhood abuse and trauma and its related aftermath. I work well with clients who may be reluctant about pursuing therapy, by meeting them where they're at in their own process of self-knowing. I strive to provide clear explanations, grounded in the latest psychological science, of the client's presenting problem, as well as of the treatment process, whenever possible.
I work with clients collaboratively, empathically, and without judgment to create a shared understanding of the current problem, its history and etiology, and the present factors that maintain it. I seek to help clients develop internal processes and structures that will allow them to implement external changes. In the past, I've held positions at college counseling centers, private hospitals, and at the VA Medical Center. In addition to a general adult population, I have sub-specialties in working with young adults, men, and military veterans. In addition, I maintain a professional network of mental health providers and readily provide referrals to specialists when appropriate.
