| Practice Description: |
I work with a variety of techniques that I incorporate into a dynamic approach to play therapy. I specialize in trauma recovery and attachment issues from childhood exposure to violence, emotional, sexual and physical abuse, foster placement and adoption. I also work with children with explosive disorder, impulse control, anger management, anxiety disorders and ADHD. I'm happy to collaborate with additional practitioners in the field of Alternative Medicine, Occupational Therapists, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, Psychologists, Psychiatrists and MD's. I also have a community of such providers for referrals as needed.
Memories, perceptions and emotions are stored in both the brain and the body. My approach includes an integration of head, hand and heart through MIND, such as skill building activities with child, parent/guardian, siblings and the entire family as a unit; MOVEMENT, such as EFT, yoga and bilateral integration exercises; and SPIRIT, such as sand tray, dramatic play, art, games, storytelling (narrative). My methods are effective with severely traumatized children who are reluctant to trust and/or have selective mutism as they can be conducted (to a certain point) without speech, and equally effective with children who have faced common yet stressful life transitions. Family participation is key to the success of the child, and I use filial play therapy to support you in better understanding and communicating with your child, as well as talk therapy for personal processing of parenting issues.
My fully equipped play therapy office is located in a home setting, which puts children at ease and helps them feel safe in what can otherwise be a frightening experience. I also have a pet therapy dog, at your request, to build rapport, trust and a sense of safety.
I have 6 years post graduate experience with children ages 3-11 years old in Early Head Start, Residential Treatment and School-based mental health services.
