I see psychotherapy as a dialogue between two people that can yield great personal growth and transformation. The unique context of a safe, supportive and trusting psychotherapeutic relationship facilitates the exploration/examination of areas of difficulty, hurt, and vulnerability. As a therapist, I help my patients gain a deeper understanding of their problems through a detailed examination of their current and past experiences. I believe that an ongoing analysis of one’s thoughts and feelings about conflictual material leads to increased levels of awareness, a deepening of consciousness and a release of pent up emotion. Therapeutic work often yields new perspectives and insights while illuminating destructive and unproductive patterns of behavior. My patients typically gain increased confidence/self acceptance and in turn, feel empowered to make improvements in their lives.
I dislike orthodoxy and rigidity. I believe a therapist should be pragmatic and flexible. Each person needs to be approached in a way that supports her or his unique needs. I think it is important to meet people where they are at and work with individuals at their own pace. I believe in working in an open, active and collaborative way with my patients, whether it be offering my insights, comments, advice or asking probing questions. I also welcome feedback and thoughts from my patients about how our work is progressing.
In addition to my work in private practice, I have also been the Program Director of an HIV Mental Program in Brooklyn, taught counseling at Teachers College/Columbia University and lead seminars on professional development to psychology trainees. For many years now, I have also supervised psychologists, psychology doctoral candidates, social workers, and addiction counselors.
