Hello there! You have probably taken some time to decide to look for counseling. You may have asked your friends and relatives, or tried to figure it out yourself. Yet finding a therapist is strange territory, not at all like finding a physician or lawyer. On top of this it's estimated there may be over 300 approaches to therapy for emotional problems, each with its own purpose and limitations. The effectiveness of many of these approaches has not been clearly extablished. Yikes!
I am in the same boat, wondering and hoping that my practice is the right one for you.
I will present openly and clearly what my practice is like, so that your decision to call me and go forward is easier for you. When you call , I'll be glad to talk over anything else you may be wondering about.
A practice overview:
A snaphot of my clinical practice is the best place to start, and then my background and training, as well as my personal approach to counseling.
You can always speak to me personally by phone or pager and schedule within the week between 12 noon and 5pm. My fees are $90 per session and I file claims for you and accept contracted amounts by your insurance. Your copayments are usually between $15 and $25 a session. We meet in person or by phone, although we usually start with a face-to-face session. I safeguard your privacy at all times, with certain exceptions under the law, and I will release your records as you direct. You get copies right away of your basic information, payment agreement, and confidentiality agreement. I will give you brief tests as needed, to get the clearest picture of the problem. I also recommend pertinent readings or media from time to time. While I cannot prescribe medications, I can refer you to experienced psychiatrists and consult with them and your primary care doctor. I am centrally located in Santa Fe, NM, close by the intersection of St. Francis and St. Michael in a quiet setting with other counselors.
Background and training:
Early on, I wanted to be a psychologist, owing to my basic interests and my experience with many diverse people in the US Navy. This passion quided me through a BS at Purdue University and graduate study at Yale University and the University of Buffalo, where I was awarded the PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1967. A Veterans Administration Hospital internship with in-patient, out-patient and geriatric settings gave me broad training. My first position was as counselor and assistant professor at Southern Illinois University for 5 years. Though tenured, I left to form a group practice of senior clinicians who could consult and collaborate. Later, as my group practice specialized more in anxiety, panic, depression and mood disorders, I did research and training in anxiety problems like phobias and obsession. My interests have taken me to other work sites such as solo, multi-site community practice and hospital-based practice.
I have sought broad training in state-of-the-art therapies, as diverse as mind-body therapy, complimentary medicine, family systems, sex therapy, hypnosis, cognitive-behavioral therapy, PTSD treatments, assertive training, and meditation, to name a few. As I integrated these into my practice, I evaluated when and how each is most useful, as well as which most suited my interests and abilities.
Over time, my interests converged on the life of emotions and how they may entrap or fulfill, finding these in the broadest range of problems, including family relations, grieving, panic, loneliness and dating, career stress and fulfillment, spirituality, and other areas. I wrote the book Panic Free as a complete quide to both professionals and sufferers to overcome panic and extreme anxiety. My latest book, The Purpose of Emotions, is a comprensive model about how emotions arise, evolve and are either fulfilled or end up as entrapping moods. Writing is a satisfying part of my professional life.
My approach:
In the first sessions, I listen closely to what you are going through and to your feelings , and sense all the conditions of life that bear upon your situation. Here, I am helped by short tests, like the Stress Checklist, the Worry Habit Scale, and Phobic SItuation Test, and other problem-focused tests. I'll ask, naturally, about family relations, job stress, health problems, critical events, supportive people, beliefs, key relationships, and more. As you may guess, the more we know ot what the problem actually is, and the extent of it, the more clear is the way to resolve it.
I will also ask about your previous counseling and how it worked out, as this helps the direction we take. I will look for recurring patterns in your mood or behavior, as these help us choose where to introduce change and get control. I'll also ask about how you have helped yourself, as this gives a sense of what you are ready for and what we can build upon. A supportive partner can be a key to getting a jump start and contrinuing progress. Importantly, I will ask about life satisfactions and goals that matter to you, knowing that these motivate and help you get through difficult times.
When we decide how to make constructive change, at any step, it is always a collaborative decision. I do not use a one-therapy-for-all model for therapy. I draw from many methods and alternatives to offer what seems to best suit you and the problem you are facing. We may look for constructive change in beliefs, attitudes, emotions or actual behavior, and look carefully at the consequences for your feelings, relationships, and well-being. We try to make change in bite-size, careful steps, using continuous feedback to get the best results. The goals themselves are set in line with your need and wishes.
I hope this introduction has helped you to get a feel for how we may work together. I look forward to hearing from you and hope that you'll now find it easier to make the step to call me. |
