| Practice Description: |
I am a supportive, experienced Psychologist helping individuals and couples achieve greater life satisfaction and healthier relationships. I have brought warmth, knowledge, and compassion to my work with clients for over 20 years as a Psychotherapist. My approach to psychotherapy is to create a safe environment through listening and empathy that will enable my clients to talk about patterns in their lives that are causing them distress. It is important to help my clients develop insight into the ways in which they feel unfulfilled in different areas of their lives. In this process, it is important to help my clients explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and dreams. This opens the door to resolving difficulties that my clients are having, and to developing healthier relationships and new sources of self-worth and life satisfaction.
I am a licensed Psychologist, Couples Therapist, Hypnotherapist, and Certified Health Psychologist. I have a Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Colorado, Boulder, one of the top Clinical Psychology programs in the U.S. I completed a Doctoral Internship at the University of Washington Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry. I also completed a Post-Doctoral Internship at the Berkeley Therapy Institute. I am currently in private practice in the Rockridge district of Oakland, California. My approach to psychotherapy is Psychodynamic, Humanistic, and Cognitive-Behavioral. I have a general Psychotherapy practice for adults and adolescents, and I focus on depression, anxiety, childhood issues, stress, self-esteem, relationship issues, school & work issues, parenting, grief, and life transitions.
One of my primary areas of specialization is in Relationship and Marital Therapy. I help couples in pre-marital counseling, marital counseling, and separation/divorce counseling. I work with couples on improving communication & assertiveness, learning conflict resolution skills, deepening trust, decreasing power imbalances, enhancing emotional & sexual intimacy, and resolving individual barriers to intimacy. In addition, I have a Certificate in Health Psychology, and I specialize in treating individuals with a variety of health conditions and chronic illnesses. I help these clients work on self-esteem issues, deal with anger & denial, develop acceptance, coping & hope, address lifestyle issues, learn to thrive in spite of Illness, work on stress management & pacing, and improve mood & sleep.
I have been trained in Hypnosis, and I use this technique to reduce stress & anxiety; increase self-confidence & assertiveness; reduce pain & other medical symptoms; cope with grief & depression; decrease social anxiety; improve concentration & work performance; resolve traumatic life experiences; reduce addictive & compulsive behaviors (i.e., drug & alcohol abuse, tobacco addiction, over-eating, workaholism, compulsive shopping, or hair pulling); reducing phobias (i.e., fear of crowds, public speaking, heights, or flying); recalling repressed emotions or memories; decreasing sexual dysfunction; and decreasing sleep disorders.
Lastly, I have taught Psychology courses on a number of subjects, most recently through U.C. Berkeley Extension.
