BACKGROUND
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, my expertise is helping people live fuller and more satisfying relational lives. My specializations include:
• Body-centered psychotherapy • Group therapy for men and women • Resolving couples' relationship problems • Treating anxiety, depression and disturbances associated with trauma • Lgbtq issues.
I have offices in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco and the Lake Merritt area of Oakland.
Trained in somatic psychology, group dynamics, couples therapy and EMDR (a trauma recovery therapy), my style is engaged, relational and integrates somatic, experiential, mindfulness, cognitive and psychodynamic approaches. My practice is influenced by thirty five years of mind-body practice ( Kripalu yoga, Phoenix Rising yoga therapy and aikido) as well as over twenty years of corporate business experience. COUPLES THERAPY
I welcome couples of all lifestyle orientations who want to deepen intimacy, increase understanding and empathy and replace ineffective arguing with clear, honest communication. My approach in working with you and your partner is to first help you identify how you both form limiting patterns that keep you grappling with problems and blocking intimacy and connection. Once you figure out how you do what you do, you can then learn how to influence those patterns to create choice and positive change in your relationship.
BODY-CENTERED THERAPY
My somatic approach to psychotherapy is informed by Stanley Keleman's Formative Psychology. Somatic psychology, originally developed by Wilhelm Reich, is grounded in human biological and anatomical process. In other words, our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are linked to our body-based experience.
When we are afraid or hurt, especially during childhood, we learn to protect ourselves by creating defenses. Many of us learn these defensive patterns of protest by watching others who may also be frightened, worried, sad or angry. These defensive protests are expressed as physical postures. Over time, we become experts at calling upon these defensive postures involuntarily. Patterns that served to protect us as children or at an earlier time in our lives , often become obstacles later in life because they inhibit our choices and abilities to be loving, authentic and vibrant adults. Formative psychology teaches people how to influence experience, thoughts, feelings and behaviors by identifying and modifying habituated defensive patterns in the body. The work is gentle and subtle and requires practice. With practice, many of us find this kind of body-based therapy helps us take charge of our lives, realize choices and, thereby, live more fully and freely in relationship with ourselves and others.
ANXIETY, DEPRESSION AND TRAUMA
While some of us may easily recall particular incidents that were and continue to be frightening and deeply disturbing, sometimes we may not so readily remember specific situations or events that still continue to get in our way. What we sense or feel as anxiety or depression or fear or anger may be the residue of unresolved events or memories. If you suffer from anxiety, depression and the effects of trauma including physical, sexual or emotional abuse, incorporating EMDR into our work together may be effective for you. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-based psychotherapy that can reduce the impact and symptoms associated with deeply disturbing memories. Through the use of either visual, auditory or pulsatory bi-lateral stimulation and a body-based, cognitive protocol originally developed by Francine Shapiro, PhD., EMDR can help you integrate unresolved emotional disturbances and support the natural human tendency toward wholeness, well-being and healthy adult perspective. For more information about EMDR go to www.emdria.org.
GROUP THERAPY
If you are interested in group therapy, presently, there are openings for men and women in the Wednesday night “ Intimate, Honest and Real” therapy process group that I facilitate in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. If you are at a point in your personal growth or individual therapy when taking what you’ve learned and explored about yourself into a facilitated group therapy setting might be a useful next step, please contact me.
I offer long term general therapy groups for men and women seeking greater fulfillment and authenticity in relationships. Whether we feel stuck socially or in unfulfilling work or relationships, most of us can benefit from group support to help build a new foundation for healthy choice and change. These on-going interactive groups are designed for adults who have some previous therapy experience and are often helpful as an adjunct to individual therapy. Members are asked for a 1 year commitment to the group. Men and women who may find process-oriented group therapy helpful include people:
1. Seeking a genuine sense of connection and authenticity with others. 2. Transitioning out of individual therapy and wishing to continue personal growth work in a facilitated group setting. 3. Exploring issues regarding "being seen and heard." 4. Curious about how they are experienced by others. 5. Wanting to learn how disagreement and healthy conflict can build more intimate resilient relationships. 6. Open to exploring commonality within difference. 7. New to the area and desiring a sense of group community.
