| Practice Description: |
Healthy families need nurturing parent-child relationships, clearly defined parent roles, and consistent household routines. I work closely with families to help parents provide the necessary environment to help their children heal from early childhood trauma, loss, adoption, and other types of psychological distress. I help restore and/or create healthy interpersonal relationships that allow an individual to achieve higher self-esteem, greater satisfaction, and more harmonious family functioning. Academic and peer problems often arise from emotional discomfort, and an inability to recognize, acknowledge and cope appropriately . My counseling sessions are used as "learning labs" to explore the uncomfortable feelings that drive behaviors, and to consciously choose more positive ways of managing distress. I have extensive training in attachment, family systems, play therapy, and Gestalt therapy. My approach is family-based, straight-forward, supportive, and interactive. I specialize in working with all families, including adoptive/foster families and non-traditional family constellations. As a bilingual therapist (Spanish/Portuguese/English), I also have expertise in cross-cultural adaptation and other immigrant issues.
