| Practice Description: |
In couples and individual therapy I use the most cutting-edge approaches that are distinctive from traditional psychotherapy which often depend on the subjective interpretations of a stranger. I'll facilitate a compassionate, non-confrontational process by which you can access the full range of your emotional intelligence and learn how to resolve inner polarizations that might otherwise keep your emotions in charge of you or your relationship.
I recommend that you consider asking any therapist you meet how you'll avoid "therapy backlash," a common but avoidable result of prematurely digging up difficult issues without the scaffolding needed to promote growth and change. You'll get this scaffolding in our work together. We'll also avoid the second most frequent snag in conventional therapy: treading water or avoiding the real issue. I'm not confrontational and use a non-judging, non-shaming technique to help you notice, in the moment, when you might be unintentionally treading water. We don't even try to make it stop right away. We'll just get to know more about it and learn how to appreciate this if it happens.
I do therapy from the "inside-out." I've learned that I can only be a useful guide to healing and growth when I have practiced doing this with my own "hard-to-love" parts of me. You can be assured that when you and I find ourselves in very deep water that I am intimately familiar with both being the guide and the one being guided. And because I'll be letting you teach me about how your inner system works, I have tremendous trust of the process that we will be using to steer our journey.
I'm steps away from the Metro at Dupont Circle. Many of my clients get reimbursed from their insurance companies for my fees. I take Aetna and Tricare insurance directly. You may want to consider trying phone counseling after we've met if you live far from me since my approach tends to allow this to work quite well.
