Specialties: Marriage Counseling, Couples Counseling, Christian Counseling, Women's issues, Adolescents, Relationships, Depression/Anxiety, Grief & Loss, Divorce, Eating Disorders, Anger. My clients see change. Restoring love and relationship involves healing from resentment and relearning healthy communication patterns. Karis Counseling means "grace," the acceptance we show each other as we risk change. Therapy is focused on empathy, personal responsibility for your part of the problem, and commitment to change. Goals are generated at the first session, and couples are empowered as each lets go of self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. Healing is possible from infidelity and other hurtful life events even if love seems hopeless. Trigger issues are explored including core values, male/female differences, losses, anger, depression, parenting, sex, boundaries, control, and addictions. Passionate relationship can be realized in an atmosphere of mutual respect and love, and your deepest need to be known intimately is met as each partner becomes more emotionally giving. Most couples are stuck in a raging cycle of blame from not feeling heard. Therapy helps both partners increase awareness of wounds in the other and learn sacrirficial love and empathy. Anger is a secondary emotion and never the main problem. A safe, confidential atmosphere is needed for each to have grievances understood and unresolved issues finally healed. Freedom to be uniquely different from your spouse is experienced in an accepting, validating, and intimate new relationship. Recreating your marriage can be a reality as you invest an honest attempt to recover what was lost. We are created for relationship, and I believe in strong love. I treat women's issues including self-injury, depression/anxiety, recovery from addictions and abusive relationships, self-esteem, single parenting, career adjustment, and eating disorders. New confidence results as we explore unique stories of losses and disappointments. A renewed sense of self encourages you in reaching out in new relationships and restoring old ones. Adolescent counseling addresses low motivation, academic and social problems, family conflict, substance abuse, and boundaries. Teens are under incredible stress of physiological changes and demands from our culture which contribute to their poor coping skills. Parents are encouraged to intervene in their lives for help in adjusting. Adolescents love therapy.
Sessions are relaxed, interactive, and solution-focused. I use an integrative approach including cognitive behavioral, family systems, and christian counseling principles. Spirituality is included in sessions at your request. Journaling, reading, and referrals to physicians may be part of the treatment. Goals are generated together at the first session, and you may request changes in treatment or opt out of any technique. Sessions average 5-10 weeks and may continue as long as you desire. I have 3 adult children and have been married 27 yrs.
