| Practice Description: |
I'm a licensed psychologist in private practice in Cambridge and Newburyport, where I see adults age 18+. Please visit my website http://www.drtownsend.net to learn more about me. I practice short- and longer-term individual therapy, with a focus on self-worth and relationship concerns, adjustment and transition issues, and/or career and academic dilemmas. I also meet with people who want to increase their capacity to manage anxiety and depression, improve their body image and relationship with food, and generally feel more fulfilled. (See below for more information on common concerns/goals for counseling.)
People who've found meeting with me helpful have described feeling comfortable and safe to explore what they most needed to share. I've received feedback that I'm warm and accepting, an excellent listener and gently confrontative, and effective at helping people take positive steps in their lives.
My theoretical orientation is integrationist, drawing on psychodynamic, relational and mindfulness-informed approaches. I like to focus on people's strengths and natural resilience when facing challenging choices and circumstances. A key factor in helping my clients meet their goals is the trusting, respectful therapy relationship that we build together.
Common Concerns and Goals
Clients in counseling and psychotherapy with me express the common hope of increased happiness in life, but present with their own specific goals. These goals are unique to the person and frequently constellate around certain themes, such as:
-building confidence, self-acceptance, and a secure sense of identity -increasing their capacity to manage anxiety and depression -recovering from compulsive overeating/binge eating and nurturing a positive relationship with food -learning to trust themselves in their relationships, career choices, academic endeavors, and other important domains -exploring their feelings and thoughts to increase self-knowledge and insight -using sport psychology techniques to enhance performance, both on and off the "field" -understanding the relationship between anxiety and assertiveness/speaking up -gaining skills and support to cope with challenging transitions and life experiences (i.e., changing jobs, managing health concerns, divorce, -acculturating to a new culture, becoming a parent, losing a family member or friend, infertility, etc.)

Fee-for-Service
I primarily offer fee-for-service counseling and psychotherapy, but am also an in-network provider for most Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. In addition, you may have out-of-network benefits that would cover a percentage of my fee. If you'd like to find out whether your insurance company would reimburse you for the cost of counseling/therapy with me, I encourage you to contact your insurance company. Questions that you might ask your insurance company include:
-Do I have out-of-network benefits to see a licensed psychologist? -If so, what percentage do you cover? -What is the deductible, and how much of the deductible have I met? -What is my co-pay for a session if I see an out-of-network provider? -How many sessions are covered, and in what time period? -How do I access the form(s) needed to submit a request for reimbursement? -Getting Coverage for Out-of-Network Providers
The Massachusetts Psychological Association (MPA) has provided some suggestions for getting mental health coverage for out-of-network providers through your managed care network. For example, MPA recommends requesting an out-of-network authorization from your managed care network; contacting the Bureau of Managed Care; and contacting the Human Resources Department at your employer who is providing the health coverage. These and other options are further described on the MPA website, which you can access by clicking on the following link: http://mapa.affiniscape.com/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=58. |

| Additional Comments: |
I encourage you to contact me if you would like to talk about counseling and/or psychotherapy. The best way to reach me is by phone at either 617-491-0707 (Cambridge office) or 978-499-9080 (Newburyport office). Please leave me a message if I do not pick up your call. I generally respond to messages within 24-48 hours. You may also send me a email (kc@drtownsend.net) to discuss finding a time to talk.
I am available to meet with you in Harvard Square (Cambridge) or on the North Shore (Newburyport). During the initial phone consultation (usually about 5-15 minutes) we can briefly discuss your current concerns, goals, and hopes, as well as my style and approach to counseling/therapy. I am also glad to discuss logistical and other details, such as my office location and directions, scheduling, and payment questions. In the process of meeting in-person over 2-3 sessions you and I will both get a better sense of the fit between your needs and what I offer. I look forward to the opportunity to talk with you further about any of these topics. |
