| Practice Description: |
I have worked with adults and children who are frustrated, frightened, angry and often depressed. I do not think that people lack insight or the ability to think wisely about their problems. What can be so frustrating is that insight is not enough. The inability to move forward into a meaningful life can require more than just intelligent reflection. My work with those who come to see me is aimed at helping them think a little harder and a little better to find the solutions which will move them forward. But it is not only thinking harder and better it is having an experience of the complex tapestry that is a person's life. This goes beyond a knowledge of one's self that is genuine or authentic and into a realm which is disarming and strange but ultimately enriching. The Children I have worked with have encountered persistent difficulty with the basic skills needed for class room success. Often, for these young people, concentration and cooperation have been tools not easily applied despite their intelligent grasp of many difficult concepts. Many times there are pressures on these young lives. Things like the death of a close family member, a parent for instance can make life terribly difficult. The children I have seen have had great difficulties getting along at home as well. The time afforded them with me to play and think about their lives has proven very valuable.
I put my attention on things that do not seem to make sense, at least not at first. My patients and I talk about their dreams, their misstatements and things they do which seem to be silly at the time. What never stops impressing me is there there are always amazing things to learn about one's self, about one's own life and the life of another. To discover these things gives us a way to go forward stronger and with greater enthusiasm about the future.
