| Practice Description: |
As an interactive therapist, I work with my client's within a supportive, safe, non-judgemental environment in order to achieve clients' goals and improve their lives. I predominately use a psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral or family systems approach, but may at times use other approaches in order to best fit my client’s needs and comfort level.
INDIVIDUALS: I help client's with a variety of issues in order to achieve their goals to health and well being by looking at what is and what isn’t working, to develop healthier coping skills in dealing with challenges, develop healthier ways to express feelings, create healthier boundaries, and negotiate differences within relationships by not only teaching new skills but by repairing psychic injuries from the past. Part of my approach is assisting clients to become aware of their buried feelings regarding the important people and experiences of their pasts and to understand how those feelings have impacted their choices, views of themselves, and their ways of coping with the challenges in their lives. Helping clients to become aware of how the mind and body work together is also a part of my work.
COUPLES: In working with couples, (all forms of relationships are welcome, valued and celebrated: non-married, married, co-habitating and same sex) I focus on the issues in the relationship rather than the form of the relationship. I help them to get in touch with and discover the underlying feelings that drive their interactions as well as helping them to better understand each other, develop healthier communication skills and enhance intimacy . I also provide premarital education and counseling.
PARENTING: I am a certified Love and Logic parent instructor and am experienced and knowledgable about child development and in helping parents with implementing effective strategies and communication skills to make parenting less stressful all while enhancing attachment and instilling responsibility in children. I have been teaching effective parenting for ten years. Working with the foster/adoptive population is another specialty of mine and have vast experience helping this population with loss, grief, identity, trauma and adoption issues. Having conducted ongoing foster/adoptive preparation classes and homestudies for 7 years, I am able to assist couples and families prepare for and decide whether or not to adopt along with helping them to understand and prepare for the special issues related to parenting this population.
My professional experience includes conducting court ordered parenting classes, co-facilitating a domestic violence group for one year, counseling families, individuals, couples and children before and after obtaining my Master's in Social Work and licensure. I also have interned at an inpatient psychiatric facility for children and adolescents for one year, and at a family clinic for another year. I enjoy working with clients from diverse cultures and lifestyles.
I completed a one year training with Dr. Walter Brackleman at the NPI at UCLA in couples' therapy and have partipated in and continue on-going training in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy. I also am conducting and continue to train in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral therapy.
