| Practice Description: |
You need not, and in fact cannot, teach an acorn to grow into an oak tree, but when given a chance, its intrinsic potentialities will develop. Similarly, the human individual, given a chance, tends to develop his particular human potentialities." When Karen Horney wrote these words over sisty years ago, she was writing about the limitations on human development when less-than-ideal life circumstances abound. However, she believed in the potential for all people to actualize their real self. I believe it is the aim of therapy to provide the nurturance and challenges needed to create a dynamic environment in which one can grow.
