| Practice Description: |
Healing from emotional distress requires a safe, caring relationship with another human being. Twenty years experience enable me to provide those conditions to women through the use of feminist, mindfulness-based psychotherapy.
Mindfulness is awareness of all that is present at this moment: thoughts, sights, sounds, feelings, everything that arises within us and everything that we observe of the outside world. In mindfulness we open ourselves to our full experience and learn to accept ourselves completely. Many of us are hounded by an inner judge who is always finding us wanting. The inner judge is a persistent critic of all that we do, whatever we feel, who we are. In mindfulness based psychotherapy we work on quieting the inner critic and developing full self-acceptance.
Feminist therapy values diversity and the uniqueness of each individual. It is based on an appreciation of the many conditions that affect an individual’s life. These include conditions related to the larger social environment, such as racism, sexism, and homophobia, as well as more personal conditions such as family history, interests and abilities, and relationship experiences. In feminist therapy we work to develop an understanding of how the social roles women have been given can contribute to emotional problems. As a feminist therapist I see my work as a collaboration between therapist and client. Through our joint effort we can uncover the roots of the client’s distress and develop alternatives that will improve her quality of life.
Awareness is magical. As we increase our awareness, something shifts in us. Our perspective changes. New viewpoints come into focus. Our feelings change as do our choices. We discover that we have the capacity to handle our lives more effectively, knowing what needs to be changed and what to leave alone. And we learn to embrace the whole quirky, fallible human being that we are.
