| Practice Description: |
Do you feel guilty because you can’t seem to cheer up your child? Are you frustrated because your child can’t seem to focus or follow simple directions around the house? Does your child always seem irritable, angry or anxious? Do you think you have run out of options and that your teenager is heading down the wrong path? I am here to help!
Unlike adults, children have not developed their emotional vocabularies; therefore, they experience depression, anxiety and traumatic experiences differently. Children often experience these feelings in ways that impact their ability to develop positive relationships with their peers, excel in school and meet their parents’ expectations at home. These issues tend to be more pronounced in foster and adopted children. I offer special insight for children who have been placed in foster care, children who have grown up in the child welfare system and have been adopted, and children that have reunited with their birth parents and are in need of supportive services.
My treatment approach is to provide brief solution focused therapy to provide support and practical tools to help children and adolescents address current life challenges or longstanding issues. We will focus on what you want to achieve through therapy rather then the problems that caused you to seek treatment for your child and/or your family. We will draw on your strengths and resources in addition to creating new ones.
The therapeutic relationship is one of the keys to successful therapy. We will work together collaboratively on problems that you identify to work on. I will listen openly, be honest, upfront, supportive, compassionate, respectful and confronting when necessary. Play therapy is incorporated into my treatment approach with children, adolescents and their families as children learn to process their emotions and learn new ways to cope through their play and creative processes.
