| Practice Description: |
ACTIVE APPROACH Through many years of teaching and practicing Brief Psychotherapy, I have learned the value of a highly active, focused and interactive approach, regardless of whether the therapy is brief or long term. This requires that the therapeutic dialog be vigorously directed toward understanding the issues that are causing anguish or preventing the satisfaction and self actualization merited by the patients strengths.
COLLABORATIVE JOURNEY Whether the patient is an individual or a couple, I view my task as helping to define appropriate goals and keeping the therapy on track. While the purpose of the therapeutic journey is mutually determined and the the patient is an active partner in determining and evaluating the route, I particularly direct the journey when it turns to the past. While history is invariably interesting, efficient use of therapeutic time requires selecting those aspects that are most likely to have relevance for the present difficulties.
DIRECTNESS AND CARING While patients appreciate my clarity, directness and tactful confrontation, they also appreciate the respect, caring and warm regard that clearly underlie my interventions. They also value my humor and my belief that even when things are bad and there is need of a safe space for sadness, mourning or rage, there is also room for laughter.
