I work with adult daughters of borderline mothers and men with anger issues.
Adult daughters of borderline mothers may experience long-term depression and/or anxiety symptoms. They often report feeling insecure in their relationships and inadequate in how they mother their own children. We explore their childhood experiences with mothers whose behaviors were confusing and "crazy-making" at times and how these experiences required them to develop coping skills that no longer serve them. I offer empathic support as they learn to sit with distressing emotions, so that they can fearlessly confront these feelings and more effectively work through them. We work together to identify and develop a healthier "mothering" model that allows them to be self-caring and accepting, vs self-denying and rejecting. This ultimately leads to more fulfilling relationships and to an improved sense of "self."
Men with anger issues usually contact a therapist when their anger has resulted in behaviors that are becoming harder to manage. Usually the people closest to them are demanding that they
"get some help, or else..." These men often present to therapy extremely frustrated and report feeling violated and invisible. They also report frustration and resistance at the idea of having to "stop being angry" without an appropriate outlet for their feelings. Together, we identify the root causes of their anger and why they are expressing those feelings in ways that are clearly not effective in communicating what they need. We explore different ways of coping and communication skills that will allow them to assert themselves without aggressive action.
I work collaboratively with my clients to not only help them resolve symptoms, but to also help them gain better insight and understanding of the meaning behind and underneath their symptoms. My passion is to help clients adopt a more loving and accepting view of the Self. Ultimately, this view allows clients to embrace themselves completely, moving them toward Mature Awareness and Wholeness. This type of work helps them to more effectively tap into their innate potential and to live Authentically and Creatively.
