Practice Description: As a clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric-mental health, and working in various medical and psychiatric settings for the past 25 years, I have come to realize what an enormous impact the provision of mental health has in speeding medical recovery times for clients. Mental health counseling is essential in providing a holistic level of care for clients experiencing chronic pain, and disabling or terminal physical illnesses. An individual's mental health and ability to cope with illness is greatly affected by psychological and developmental processes that were experienced in childhood. This requires specialized training by a professional who is educated in the processes of psychological development, as well as someone who understands the medical issues which may be encountered. As a clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric mental health, I am uniquely qualified to treat psychological as well as medical issues. In addition, my internship and training as a Ph.D in clinical psychology enables me to understand the client's mental health and medical issues at a deeper level. As a psychotherapist, the combination of nursing and clinical psychology provides me with an increased understanding of medical as well as psychological issues my clients may be experiencing. My approach to therapy is eclectic, utilizing a blend of different theories and therapies that are tailored to the individual's needs. My dissertation on "The Lived Experience of Separation and Loss in Childhood: A Phenomenological Experience, has included extensive research on grieving separations and losses at each stage of development. The psychological losses experienced by individuals who are experiencing chronic pain and facing disabling or terminal illnesses is extensive, and requires a professional who is skilled in assisting these clients to grieve their losses.
