| Practice Description: |
I specialize in working with children and teens (ages 4-17), couples counseling, and adults. I treat depression, anger, anxiety, trauma, ADD/ADHD, relationship problems, substance abuse, and issues related to disability, medical concerns, chronic pain, creativity, grief and loss, and life transitions. I also teach workshops on mindfulness for stress reduction.
My approach to treatment is based on the idea that nobody wants to be unhappy, but the way people often try to "fix" being unhappy can cause more problems. It seems that the more we try to get away from our pain, the more it seems to follow. Or we take an approach of "attacking" problems, which often causes them to become worse. We get stuck in patterns of "attack and defend," and this approach to becoming happier ends up making us feel more hurt, more stuck, and more broken.
We all want to feel healthy, connected, and whole. Mindfulness-based psychotherapy teaches how to let go of "attack and defend" and approach our pain and problems with kindness, courage, and clarity.
Mindfulness reveals how wellness is our natural state of being, and that everyone has the potential to reclaim and rediscover their inherent vitality, sanity, and kindness. Positive change, better emotional health, and a more satisfying life is possible because this natural wellness is always available.
