| Practice Description: |
As someone who has recovered from an eating disorder and as a therapist, I have seen this problem from all sides. In the many years I have worked alongside other women in the process of taking their lives back from eating disorders, I have seen recovery done in many different ways. I know that each person’s journey is his or her own, and I believe it is my job to help people put together a recovery that is unique to them.
My experience working in treatment facilities as well as outpatient settings, has provided me with the skills necessary to be creative and resourceful in building plans based on your individual needs and hopes, and throughout the process to continue to evaluate and check in with you to ensure that we are on track with your evolving goals for recovery. Although I believe in being a ‘side by side’ therapist in this journey with you, this is not all that I am willing to be. I come in to the room with a lot of active energy and an ability to notice, appreciate and grow all the skills, strengths and knowledges you already have. Then, in a safe environment, I’m willing to challenge you to risk a little in order to learn and build those skills and knowledges required to recover. Every one of us has a growing edge and strengths that are yet to be accessed; I’m really good at creating the safety needed to allow you to connect to those strengths. Whether that means practicing new skills together, giving you homework, or having meal sessions together, I’m going to help you figure out what the problem is, in non-standardized terms, and then help you figure out creative ways to solve it. Everybody is different. Together, we’ll figure out what specifically has been supportive to you and how we can continue to build upon those supports.
Often eating disorders occur with other problems, such as addiction, depression, anxiety, impulsivity, compulsivity, abuse and trauma. In my years of experience as a member of a highly regarded, team approach treatment facility, I have worked extensively with a wide variety of co-occurring problems. I believe in engaging with individuals in a respectful way that honors their complex experiences and takes nothing for granted. I remain curious and interested in exploring lots of experiences and events that can contribute to problems. Not from a blaming perspective, or through a cause and effect lens, but rather that there are many reasons and experiences that cause people to suffer. I believe one does not have to “go back” into childhood to work through problems. I consider myself a present, here-and-now focused therapist and what I am most interested in is re-connecting individuals to their values and beliefs that predate the problem, bringing forward one’s passions, desires and appetites for living.
